Palanga Sculpture Park
The Sculpture Park, located in the centre of the city at the intersection of Vytautas and J. Simpson streets, attracts not only the attention of passers-by, but also becomes a place of attraction for those who wish to spend a quiet summer holiday with their families, children or friends.
In the Sculpture Park, visitors can admire sculptures given to the Municipality of Palanga by the Lithuanian Art Museum.
Palanga Sculpture Park was established in 1982 in the city centre, at the intersection of Vytautas and J. Simpson streets. Since the park has attracted the attention of holidaymakers and visitors to Palanga, it has been expanded and renovated several times. In 2008, on the occasion of the park’s 25th anniversary, Palanga Municipality launched a renovation project. The architect L. Mardos, who also designed the first exposition of the park, designed the reconstruction project.
In the reconstructed Sculpture Park, visitors can admire 28 sculptures given to the Palanga Municipality by the Lithuanian Art Museum. At present, the Sculpture Park displays the works of famous Lithuanian sculptors K. Kisieliaus, B. Vyšniauskas, L. V. Strioga, B. Zalens, A. D. Belevičius, V. Krutinis, A. Toleikis, A. Žukauskas, D. O. Matulaitė. The exposition is also decorated with valuable works of foreign sculptors from Latvia, Estonia, Ukraine and Armenia.
The Sculpture Park not only attracts the attention of passers-by, but in summer it becomes a place of attraction for those who wish to spend a quiet holiday with their families, children or friends. It is also a welcome place for lovers of the intellectual sport of chess.
In 2018, on the initiative of the Palanga Chess Lovers Club, a stationary chess table was erected in the sculpture park in honour of Albertas Žulkas, a Palanga folk master and a great chess enthusiast.
In 2020, the chess board will be renovated and a giant outdoor chess set will be available for playing.
