Old Jewish cemetery of Palanga (I) (Palanga Birutė Park area)
The old Jewish cemetery of Palanga was located at the edge of the Count Tiškevičius Park, next to the entrance. The place is now called Youth Hill. There is a sculpture by Steponas Šarapovas called “The Rifleman”, based on the triptych “Zodiac” by M.K. Čiurlionis. The cemetery has been closed since 1892 (before the construction of Tiškevičius Park). Layers more than 200 years old have been found there. It is believed that the tombstones (matzevot) were decorated with the Temple of Jerusalem, the Decalogue, the signs of the Zodiac and other sacred Jewish symbols.
