The house where Vladas Jurgutis, a famous Lithuanian financier, lived

Jurgutis Vladas Rafaelis (1885-1966) – politician, economist, academic, founder of the Bank of Lithuania, priest, creator of financial terminology, member of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, professor. Born in Palanga, studied at the Palanga gymnasium (1897-1901). For his work in the Bank of Lithuania, V. Jurgutis was awarded the Order of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas, 2nd Class (1927), and for his work in public service – the Order of Vytautas the Great, 2nd Class (1934). In 1997, Palanga Secondary School was renamed V. Jurgutis Secondary School (now V. Jurgutis Primary School). A memorial stele (sculptor R. Midvikis, architect E. Benetis) was unveiled in front of the house in Palanga where V. Jurgutis lived (13 J. Piktuižio str.). On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Bank of Lithuania and the litas, gold and copper-nickel alloy 1 litas coins depicting V.Jurgutis were issued, and the V.Jurgutis Scholarship and Prize (1997) was established.
